Dictionary for Training

Training manikins

A figure of the human body simulating a patient in a treatable condition, e.g. cardiac arrest.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

BLS helps maintain adequate ventilation and circulation using a protective shield only (optional). It compromises the elements:

· Rescue breathing

· Chest compression

Failure of BLS circulation for 3-4 min. will lead to irreversible cerebral damage. Delay will reduce the chances of survival.

Early defibrillation

Restoring an adequate heart rhythm is necessary for the patient to survive cardiac arrest. By giving an electric shock directly on the patient's chest, a rescuer may be able to restart the heart. This is a vital part of resuscitation and becomes even more important as automatic defibrillators are being installed in public places in some countries.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

When the patient has been resuscitated s/he must be stabilized and transported to a hospital for additional treatment and care. ACLS includes:

· Intubation

· I.V. drug therapy

· Defibrillation

· ECG recognition and other advanced skills
